Ghosts S4E15

-_-
It feels like there's nothing left to say that hasn't already been said before [Xmas special, E11]. However, I will say that Flower's interjections to unnecessarily explain a euphemism for having sex as "when two adults share a special hug" (twice with, I think, slightly different wording after the hug bit) to Sass, who is clear that he doesn't need the explanation, adds in a dash of infantilization to all this virgin joking. He's more than aware of what everyone means if someone says 'doing it'.

Flower even gets in a line about how [plot relevant mistake Alberta made] can't be worse than Sass being a virgin. I'd love for the writers to get a new joke. I'm kind of wary as to what may happen in the next episode as we deal with Chris, the stripper hired for the bachelorette party, dying on the property; for non-viewers, Chris had an 'It's Raining Men' package where he parachuted in, but something went wrong with his parachute opening in this jump, and he crashed through the roof of Jay's newly open restaurant. I'm not saying that I'm confident that Flower will act pushy about Sass having a new ghost to fix his virgin problem with, but I'm wary of that being thrown in.

Remember the virgin joke post? I had hoped that was going to be the end of this topic, but unfortunately, it wasn't.

My family got around to S4E11, which mostly is not about this issue. Thorfinn attends a therapy session to address the abandonment he still struggled with on the anniversary of him being left behind in the New World (and this episode is about him moving on, whatever), and the ending was a bunch of the rest of the ghosts chiming in within a group ghost therapy session.

Sass' contribution: I'm a virgin.

Sam has to pretend she's got all of their issues going on in order to voice them, so the therapist looks a bit confused as he answers: Aren't you married?

Sam: Yeah, isn't that weird?

...

I don't even know how to convey the internal sigh, glare, disappointment mashup going on. The therapist's disbelief that a married woman might be a virgin. The deflection as Sam tries to come up with a non-ghost answer that goes for how weird that idea is. It was one of the ending contributions, so it feels like the last bit of humor getting in at the very end of the episode. (So, more 'the funny thing to focus on is an adult virgin' going on.)

While virgin doesn't equal ace necessarily, it feels like this is a world that doesn't have any awareness of asexuality. Granted, there's a possibility that this may come up in future episodes, but currently, there haven't been any signs of awareness. I know this is a 30-minute comedy show once a week, and it's not trying to be a sweeping educational show here. Still, after spending some time on Isaac coming to terms with attitudes around homosexuality changing from his lifetime [1770s] and coming out, a part of me wishes that someone could nod to the ace community in some way.

FenRecs

From SquidgeStatus:
Squidge.org is proud to bring you FenRecs.com - a new site that's designed to share fanfiction and other fanworks recommendations, as well as places for community discussion, from writing advice to beta requests to fandom and pairing recommendations. The site uses open-source software called Lemmy, and it is designed to be much like Reddit. If you don't know what Reddit is, it's a website that allows people to have different communities (subreddits) where they share things - from pictures to news to stories.

Additional infoFor privacy reasons, you won't be able to access FenRecs.com unless you have an account. This seems to be the best way to keep people's privacy requests fulfilled. The site allows you to block other accounts, but the one thing it does not have (at least at the moment) is tags. So you cannot search for or add tags to posts, nor can you block tags. We'll be continuing to research and see if we can add this in the future. Additionally, there is the ability to have downvotes for posts, but it is disabled at the current time. If and when the site rollout goes smoothly, downvotes may be rolled out as well.

If you are familiar with Reddit, then FenRecs.com will be second nature to you. You'll find Fic Recs and other discussions that you can upvote. A post with lots of upvotes will mean to the casual visitor that this is a fic that many people like. A post with fewer upvotes doesn't mean the work is any less valuable than a higher upvoted fic. It just means that not enough people have red it to recommend it.

User registration is going to be fully open from 10am Pacific Time until 4pm Pacific Time January 2nd, 2025 - just a six hour period. We're doing this because we do need an influx of people to come in, poke around, create some communities, and add in some fic recs and/or other discussions. After 4pm Pacific Time 1/2/25, registration will still be open; however registration will need to be approved by admins.

On the one hand, a forum place for community discussion that is not joining a dozen separate Discord servers. On the other hand, six hours to make a decision about a site that I can't see a demo of before joining. Hm.

I was taking a quick glance through the New Year's Resolution 2025 prompts for Ghosts (US), and I must admit the idea of Jay being able to see the ghosts is tempting. I know what this past Xmas special included, which possibly post-dates the prompt, but a part of me wants to bust out some Fix-It on that episode.

A virgin joke. -_- How funny.Sasappis died before he had sex with anyone. He hasn't had any ghost sex. He's a 500 year old virgin! Cue the 'pathetic' comments and 'how does that even happen' and 'isn't that so sad' and an attempt to find someone in order to 'fix this'. The thing that was focused on as what really needed fixed was Sasappis and Thorfinn's friendship after Thorfinn felt compelled to reveal this secret, but I wish we could've spared a moment to address how Sasappis isn't sad/pathetic/needing fixed for his suddenly revealed virginity.

This is just a note for future-me, since I'm not very good at remembering to check back in on SquidgeWorld Archive. But instead of one additional category for QPR, there are now some notable differences when cross-posting AO3 works.

SqWA has added to the Archive Warnings: Incest and/or Incestuous Relationship(s), and Suicide/Suicidal Ideation.

SqWA has added to the Categories: NB/F, NB/M, NB/NB, and Vs./Antagonistic.

AO3 2024 TOS Update

Open Comment Period for AO3 Terms of Service Updates:
In order to make AO3's rules clearer to our users, we intend to update the AO3 Terms of Service (TOS) in mid-November 2024. Once this occurs, all users will need to agree to the updated TOS to continue using AO3. The full text has been posted for public review, as well as a detailed explanation of what has (and hasn't) changed:
The announcement post provides a summary of changes, you have until November 18th to comment on the above announcement post before the Board of Directors for the OTW votes on the proposed changes, yada yada. [It's currently the 9th of November, so you have eight days. Maybe nine, if you want to play timezone chicken.]

Nothing's really jumping out at me in the summary of changes, but this is a reminder to delete some old March Meta Matters Challenge uploads that I don't want to come back and bite me as reportable for not being allowed fannish nonfiction (Fanworks and Non-Fanwork Content FAQ).
queer_scribbling: Pluto. Infrared photo showing a ring of blue against a black background. (pillowfort)
I got a notification that someone favorited (and is now following) That Story.

1) I completely forgot that FF.net even sent out email notifications.

2) Someone must have really been wading in the listing to find that fic. I'm impressed by the dedication (yet baffled by the interaction).

I checked a dates-between calculator, and it's been 15 years, 10 months, and 29 days since I posted the first chapter.

Harry Potter Fan Sentiment Survey
My name is Tylor Starr, and I am a Harry Potter fandom expert and nonprofit founder looking to get a sense of how fans feel about the Harry Potter fandom currently and how fans may or may not have changed their engagement with the official Harry Potter property after J.K. Rowling's critical public views on gender and transgender people.

This is 100% anonymous and will not be traced back to anyone who completes the survey, so please feel free to be as honest as possible. There will be no judgment on your answers!
For those who want to get an idea of the questions before opening the form [questions have been rearranged here on DW]:
  • Have you ever considered yourself to be a Harry Potter fan?
  • If yes, would you consider yourself a Harry Potter fan now?
  • Are you familiar with the critical views Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling, has shared regarding transgender people and gender in general?
  • If yes, do you agree with the critical views J.K. Rowling has on transgender people and gender in general?
  • Where do you personally fall on the gender spectrum? [Questions just for trans or cis respondents have been split out separately below.]
  • Have you considered boycotting the official Harry Potter property over J.K. Rowling's views on transgender people and gender?
  • If you have purchased anything official from the Harry Potter property (merch, tickets to official events, new books, streaming the films, etc.) have you offset your purchase by donating to a charity that supports transgender people?
  • If you have offset your purchase of official Harry Potter goods by donating to a charity that supports transgender people, do you plan to do this for every purchase of something officially Harry Potter in the future?
  • If you are someone who has purchased official Harry Potter goods since J.K. Rowling's critical stance on transgender people and gender, how likely are you to agree with the following statement: J.K. Rowling's stance on transgender people and gender has made me feel conflicted about my purchase of official Harry Potter goods.
If you are a transgender person...
  • If you are a transgender person who is familiar with the gender and transgender critical views of J.K. Rowling, do you still consider yourself part of the Harry Potter fandom?
  • If you are a transgender person who is familiar with the gender and transgender critical views of J.K. Rowling and still consider yourself part of the Harry Potter fandom, how likely are you to agree with the following statement: J.K. Rowling's views on transgender people and gender have made me feel conflicted about engaging with the official Harry Potter property.
  • If you are a transgender person, have you considered leaving the Harry Potter fandom over J.K. Rowling's critical views on transgender people and gender?
  • If you are a transgender person who still considers yourself part of the Harry Potter fandom, how likely are you to agree with the following statement: Purchasing official Harry Potter goods, buying new Harry Potter books, streaming Harry Potter films, etc. supports J.K. Rowling's harmful views on transgender people and causes harm to the transgender community.
  • If you are a transgender person who is still part of the Harry Potter fandom, how likely are you to agree with the following statement: I support fans who purchase official Harry Potter goods, new copies of the books, stream the films, etc. if they also offset their purchase with a donation to a charity that supports transgender people.
If you are a cisgender person...
  • If you are a cisgender person who is familiar with the gender and transgender critical views of J.K. Rowling, how likely are you to agree with the following statement: J.K. Rowling's views on transgender people and gender have made me feel conflicted about engaging with the official Harry Potter property.
  • If you are a cisgender person, have you considered leaving the Harry Potter fandom over J.K. Rowling's critical views on transgender people and gender?
  • If you are a cisgender person who still considers yourself part of the Harry Potter fandom, how likely are you to agree with the following statement: Supporting transgender people while purchasing official Harry Potter goods would make me feel better about engaging with the official Harry Potter property despite J.K. Rowling's critical views of transgender people and gender.
  • If you are a cisgender person who considers yourself part of the Harry Potter fandom, do you consider yourself an ally and safe space for transgender people?

It's one page, and I'm not sure how long the survey will remain open. This has been shared here on Pillowfort on 1 October 2024. There's a bit of a feedback on the survey itself atmosphere on PF, in case anyone's not used to that.

My thoughts copied from comments/replies...Given the vegan and animal rights focus of these prior links, I suspect they [the survey maker] probably don't have a lot of experience with surveys that ask about gender experiences or want to ask different questions to those who respond with a particular gender selection. (I'm not saying I almost filled in questions aimed at cisgender respondents, but it would've been nice to use one of those survey types that automatically give those questions to whoever selected cisgender instead of giving everyone every question.)

...

For this survey, I'm not sure if going for 'are you affected by JKR's beliefs/advocacy' vs 'are you unaffected by JKR's beliefs/advocacy' would have covered what I think they wanted to get a feel for, but I'm not sure if they thought the Other write-in option would handle anyone who didn't think cis or trans were adequate selections. (But, like, if Other was a seriously considered answer, then why weren't there any questions aimed at those who selected Other?)

...

I feel like such a killjoy about that last part:
If you are a transgender person who is still part of the Harry Potter fandom and wants to help with an initiative to support transgender people through the Harry Potter fandom, drop your email below, and I, Tylor Starr, would love to reach out to you!
What exactly is this initiative? That could be some sort of network of trans charities or a place to donate between several trans orgs/charities at once or a petition for all I know.

Who is this initiative for? Why is it only open to trans people who still consider themselves part of the HP fandom? If there's going to be an offline component or outreach to cis people, I would also like knowledgeable cis allies to be involved so everything about transness doesn't have to be done by trans people.

What does helping this initiative mean? I can drop a link to something in a fannish space. I can probably still find HP fan spaces that are supportive of trans people. I am not interested in being some sort of ambassador in general fandom spaces (like Tumblr) where anon hate is a very real possibility. I am not interested in being a public face and potentially being outed as trans to offline people.

Is this really open to people who answered Somewhat or Other to considering themselves an HP fan now? Or otherwise indicated that they have complicated feelings about this? This mostly goes back to what this initiative even is, but I'm not sure why I would definitely need to still consider myself part of the HP fandom in order to take part. (I guess it feels different from 'this is open to various fans but will focus on HP fans supporting trans people' when it sounds like 'this is only for HP fans who support trans people'.)

Pre-AO3 Fic

Monday, 2 September 2024 02:00 am
queer_scribbling: Pluto. Infrared photo showing a ring of blue against a black background. (pillowfort)

I'm keeping track of this comment from ~enchantedsleeper's post about a personal fanworks archive and Small Web September, mostly due to recounting my initial fanfic creating and sharing:

Does anyone here have any personal archiving projects, whether 'small web'/personal websites or just on AO3, SquidgeWorld or the like? How do you feel about going back to your very earliest fanworks?

I don't have much pre-AO3 fic to actually archive. I used to write by hand in notebooks, and those notebooks have been recycled, lost, or thrown out at this point. I never did anything fandom related on LJ (it just held some personal blogging with a friend or two), and I didn't share any fic on Tumblr or WordPress before I started posting to AO3. I have a vague memory of losing some fic on DA to a purge, and I think there are some ancient email drafts with notes for a few fics, but I really only needed to save one main story from FF.net.

Going back to re-read and (due to not coming across a workaround until afterwards) re-type that story wasn't pleasant. I didn't hate it, but I also feel okay with leaving it in a private folder to not been seen for potentially another ten years or so. Due to not being able to re-find anything else from that time period, I can't say it was an example of my worst writing or anything. It was just a clearly young writer still figuring out basic rules of grammar.

I haven't made much progress on finishing my cross-posting AO3 works to SqWA, though that is a goal for this year. I've heard of people starting up personal archives on Neocities or Dreamwidth on and off for a few years now (mostly here on Pillowfort, but also on Tumblr), and I kind of like the idea in theory. I don't want to juggle too many archival plans at once (as that way lies not completing any plans), and I'm also ambivalent about learning to code, so I haven't really committed to the idea.

After making a DW account in order to access the mod comm for Snowflake Challenge, I considered maybe making a community or devoting some of my DW blog to archiving stuff. [I only have to worry about text.] I'm still in the process of archiving PF posts, though, so I don't want to start coming up with tags or anything. I might flirt with the idea for a while longer. Like, I do like that you have a section for unfinished works on your personal archive, and I do like the idea of doing something with some partially started fics or very detailed notes when I don't want to put those on AO3.

For Life

queer_scribbling: Pluto. Infrared photo showing a ring of blue against a black background. (Default)
For Life started airing in winter [February] of 2020. It's inspired by the story of Isaac Wright Jr, who was given a life sentence for drug charges that he was innocent of. If I understand correctly, he became a paralegal in prison, assisted other prisoners with appeals and legal stuff, was able to establish precedent for his own appeal, found proof of police misconduct in his case, and secured his own exoneration before becoming a lawyer after leaving prison.

In the show, the main character Aaron Wallace is facing similar charges and motivation, but he becomes a lawyer while still in prison, and I'm not sure if the show ended before he got to his own exoneration. (It didn't get renewed after season two.)

My family watched the first three episodes [of season one] back closer to the airing dates, but we should have recordings for the rest of the series. These are some approximate notes about those episodes.

Ghosts (US/UK)

This is one of those shows that I point to as to why I tend to also tag "tv shows" on my fan scribbling on Pillowfort. As far as I know, each show is just called Ghosts within its original broadcast area, but I have to pick a differentiation here, so I'm going with Ghosts US and Ghosts UK.

Technically, Ghosts UK started first, but my family didn't start watching until recently. CBS brought it over, possibly to fill air time from the writer and actor strikes affecting US shows [autumn/winter 2023]. We were so caught up in enjoying the original inspiration for a show we like that we kind of forgot that British shows don't often last as long as a US season. (AKA This will cover seasons 1 and 2 because I forgot to make a post after six episodes.)

Only Murders in the Building has made its cable premiere, like, three seasons behind Hulu.

Le shrug. Here's hoping I haven't picked up any important spoilers from my OMITB Tumblrites.

Note: Episodes 1 through 3 are kind of an amorphous singular memory blob, since we got a block of them. Some details may not be siloed into the correct episode.

One of the sort of interesting things about the whole Dreamwidth back-up endeavor is that I'm actually browsing back through posts I'd forgotten.

I don't know if people were spreading the news by mouth a bit more in 2020, but Black & Pink's holiday letter campaign seemed a bit more obvious then. (It's possible that some of my online circles were still getting pandemic cabin fever around then.) It is still happening in 2023, though.

Proof: I found out about BarricadesCon, which is an online convention for Les Misérables, because their post about a Zoom meeting to write holiday letters was higher in the search results for this year's campaign than a Black & Pink account.

This is an archived post back-dated to 18 December 2023. Link rot may happen in the future.
queer_scribbling: Pluto. Infrared photo showing a ring of blue against a black background. (Default)
From @somanywips:
I hate that planned obsolescence is starting to reach fandoms. I hate that fandoms are starting to die after two, three years, I hate that whenever you stop getting content that means the fandom will die and be gone.
That post inspired some more musing on whether I should bother with putting together any fandom primers for some tv shows that aired in autumn 2022 or spring 2023. While I'm aware that meta and various fannish activity are not solely about loving a source material, I'm deeply ambivalent about putting forward fannish effort like this when I'm more 'Eh' about these shows than anything.

Tags from @ao3commentoftheday on a separate post than above:
#I think a lot about the changes in fandom #and this one feels intricately tied to the nature of streaming #binge watching a show means getting it all at once #with no time between episodes for the theories #the camaraderie #the post-ep fics #the speculation #without the breathing space that we used to have #we're all just running full tilt #headfirst and headlong from one fandom to the next #and we miss out on the slow meandering contemplation we used to have #and the opportunities for community are so much smaller #when the cracks between episodes are the length of the credits
Again, the above quote and these tags aren't in relation to one another, but I can't help but feel like they're sitting next to each other in my brain. The last time I tried my hand at making a fandom primer, there was a small but extant fandom for the show on Reddit, and I wasn't just explaining characters or making sure character and relationship tags were spelled correctly for Tag Wranglers to canonize. I could gesture, however vaguely, towards a community for someone to actually interact with, so it wouldn't feel like they were a fandom of one.

Original Pillowfort post can be found here.

I'm still rather behind on transferring my stuff to SquidgeWorld Archive, but I wanted to keep track of this tumblr post (or this archived link):
So a few years ago the Character A ~ Character B format was introduced over here on tumblr to represent QPRs. There is a post I know I reblogged a few times buried on my main somewhere about this and I'll have to try to remember to dig that up later. And there was bit of a push to try and get Ao3 to officially acknowledge the tilde or at least for those of us who write fic there start using it in tagging regardless of official acknowledgement and see what happened. And, well, what largely seems to have happened is that the tag wranglers have let us use the tilde, but there's been no official acknowledgement as the Tag Wrangling page for relationships on Ao3 still only discusses the '&' [ampersand] and '/' [slash] identifiers. (If there was anything official said about it elsewhere, sadly I must have missed it.)

I started using the tilde... two years ago? I think? And went back to update some of my existing fics to add in ship tags with the tilde. I still made sure to keep the Queerplatonic Relationship tags because those are still the best way to find fics that have QPRs included in them. And I've seen a few others using the '~' out in the wild, but discussion about it kind of faded again. If you knew, you knew. And if you didn't... there was always that Queerplatonic Relationship tag.

[...]

I started finally cross-posting to SquidgeWorld recently and honestly just didn't really think too much about it when bringing over fics tagged with the QPR identifier. I just copied over the Character A ~ Character B tags and hit post. :D

But admin-squidgie over there [...] asked me about the tilde usage and what that was being used to represent. So I responded with an explanation about how it was a relatively new identifier used because queerplatonic relationships aren't really well represented by romantic or platonic identifiers. And then admin-squidgie got back to me to let me know there'd be a news post soon about this new identifier type. Which was so awesome.

While the wrangling guidelines haven't been updated on SquidgeWorld to note the use of the tilde yet (and could take a while, I know official docs always wind up being the last thing updated), the news post really is a very big deal for those of us who like to write and read queerplatonic ships.

The reblog I saw was dated 16 July 2023, and this was posted on Pillowfort on 4 August 2023.

I just recently found about the Great British Sewing Bee, so I'm not sure if I really like the show. I may or may not ramble a bit in the comments after trying an episode or two. (I will do my best to keep all stuff about this show within the comments of this post.)

First, I feel I should note that I only just heard about a show that's been on for nearly ten years because I saw it mentioned in the notes on a knitting pattern (a shirt inspired by one of the themed challenges - Art Deco Top by Sybil R - first seen here).

Second, I could probably just admit defeat and pick a VPN, and I could probably get the BBC player to accept that I'm totally watching this show in the UK. At various points, it's been the common advice for watching the show, but I noticed in a casual search of googling ways to watch GBSB that some people have had issues with only having access to the past GBSB episodes for a set amount of time. Possibly enough to comfortably watch one or two series' worth, but a bit short on trying to watch eight series' worth of episodes, you know?

So, yeah, I went to r/SewingBee to find some links. The current series [9] looks to be offered in a Google Docs folder [pinned post], there's a 🏴‍☠️ option for series 1 through 8, and I'm keeping a link to bstsrs.one/show/the-great-british-sewing-bee [looks to be all past and current episodes].

Killing Eve

queer_scribbling: Pluto. Infrared photo showing a ring of blue against a black background. (Default)
After being emotionally compromised by certain events in season 4 episode 7 of Killing Eve and finishing episode 8, I can say that this final season has sure been something. I still stand by my mid-season thoughts, and I have finally finished out commenting on that season 4 post with post-season thoughts [see archival note].

Overall, the short version of my thoughts on this final season:
It feels like the audience - or at least, I - haven't got answers to these questions after the final season and the series finale. It's unsatisfying on a certain level, and for me, it feels like a lot of people have died for a small amount of narrative progress this season. [Redacted questions.] I'm not sure, and I kind of wish season 4 had gone differently. (Or just rewind back to the season 3 finale, and I'll pretend that's the end.)

Archival note: I split the mid-season and post-season thoughts into their own separate posts here on Dreamwidth, but the original Pillowfort had everything confined to one post (alongside the comments about each episode).

Contextual note: After view-locked to-do lists and finishing posting my pre-existing AO3 meta on the SquidgeWorld Archive, I made this post as an update on how things were going in tracking down potential meta fanworks for the March Meta Matters Challenge.

Things left for the rest of March:

~ I might add last year's fandom primer [for Ordinary Joe] to the MMMC collection?

~ The one Fandom Snowflake prompt from this year [about a hypothetical season 2 of Monarch] might be able to be tweaked and posted? Maybe?

~ I'm - Eh - at the idea of doing another fandom primer, but I dunno, it might help with some new canons from this fall/spring [Monarch, The Ark, Fire Country]. (I expect all three are new for SqWA, but Fire Country does have a fanfic presence on AO3 already.)

~ Despite tagging something as 'Episode Review' before, I'm hesitant to try to claim that anything I've done for [insert fandom] ""counts"". I might try to put something for The Ark up?

The Ark (Season 1)

queer_scribbling: Pluto. Infrared photo showing a ring of blue against a black background. (Default)
My family sort of stumbled across a new show on Syfy called The Ark.

Episode 1: Everyone Wanted to Be on This Ship

We knew that the premise didn't lend itself to a totally 100% conflict free show, but there's almost this feeling of not trusting that the incident that starts the show will be enough tension. Ark One is a spaceship in the future, and an unknown event damaging the ship triggers people waking up from their cryo-pods before they were supposed to [one year from their destination instead of two weeks]. Cue escaping the damaged cryo-pod bay, not everyone is un-cryo-ed, and there's serious questions about how they're supposed to make it for a year without the supplies for that amount of time.

This should sound stressful enough to tide us over for a season, or whatever, but so much happens:
