Day #3: In your own space, put some favorite characters into an AU, fuse some favorite canons together, talk about your favorite AU/fusion tropes, or tell us why AU/fusions aren’t your cup of tea.

I'm not really one for crossovers, including fusions, and I've only read them when a fandom event involved it. I don't have anything against the idea of a crossover, or anything. I just don't tend to gravitate towards reading or writing that type of premise without a bit of a nudge, especially if I don't know one of the universes being added into what I do know. For some fandoms, it's also easier to get rid of oneshot collections that have been piled into one fic with, say, 15+ fandoms tagged by excluding crossovers in AO3 searches.

AU fic is such a sprawling idea that I can't say that I haven't used it, but I also don't usually set out to write AUs.

It sounds rather boring, but in looking at the Alternate Universe Fanlore page, I don't really do much beyond 'AU - Canon Divergence' for fic where I've expanded on the worldbuilding enough that I think it should be forewarned. This isn't exactly uncommon in the HP fic I've written, and really, the only other AUs I can remember using an 'AU' tag in the drafts on have been variations on that (Dark, Different First War with Voldemort, No House Elves, and No Metamorphmagi).

Semi-hilarious update that I've recently gotten bitten by a Time Travel AU plot bunny or two.

I also want to note why I use two of the AUs I listed in the post.

No House Elves - I don't think removing the fictional species written analogous to slaves is the worst thing ever.

No Metamorphmagi - Sometimes, the gender exploration I want to poke at in a fic works best when a little more based on the IRL world where Metamorphmagi are not a thing. (I also have thoughts about the solely comedic, utterly unaffecting gender attributes given to the Metamorphmagus in canon as a genderfluid person, and I just can't mentally touch the concept in other fic.)
