It really does open with this whole thing about 'Moby Dick' and Captain Ahab to the audience. The idea of this detective starting up a Maritime Homicide Unit isn't, like, the worst idea ever, but with no prior knowledge of or experience with the radio programme, my family's not sold on breaking the fourth wall to address the audience. I was a little caught off guard initially, as I scrambled to remember what I've heard of 'Moby Dick', but as the episode went on, the asides grew on me.
I can't say I'd recommend this overwhelmingly to anyone who gets strong second-hand embarrassment, but you know, pulling out a handful of - I believe Norwegian - licorice from your coat pocket to share with new team members isn't life threatening, at least. Referring to the new team member by the name on her drink (Blah) also did give us a chance to see her write out her name, so I definitely remember Blair. Tyrone is currently 'guy who was held hostage with a crossbow'.
I wasn't sure if Danny - son of the presumed victim when first introduced - was supposed to read as neurodivergent-coded, but I feel like I was too distracted by passing around the injured pigeon to really keep track of that. Annika took it from Danny and toted it around in a carrier with her team for a bit and then handed it off to her daughter, who said something like, "Is this supposed to be my support animal?" (One of those sort of funny but perhaps not universally funny moments. Depends on how you feel about random pigeon cooing.)
Drowning count: One attempt. Danny holds onto an anchor and jumps off a boat at the end, but Michael jumps in and saves him (as the team's diver, he's possibly the strongest swimmer of them).
